Saint

There aren’t a lot of people in the world that would stand up for a mobster. Hell, I can’t think of one that would look me in the eye and lie to me to save another man. Lucy is that woman. She’s tenacious, wild, free, and strong in ways I can’t even imagine being. Also, annoying as hell, and I can tell she’s done something to irritate Dante, but I can’t figure what yet.

“Why am I here, Wolfie?” she barks, popping her hip up before settling her hand on its edge. “I’m working with limited time, so the lectures are going to have to be short.”

My jaw tightens. I hate hearing her talk about her life so definitively. “Everleigh told us you wanted to stay. That’s the only way I could get Viktor to leave. Did you stay to save Luca?”

She laughs. “I’m flattered you think I’m so selfless, but I’m not. I’m kind of a cunt. I figured you’d at least know that about me by now.”

“I know you’re trying to play the strong, stoic woman with no feelings who wants to fuck her way to a happy ending, but don’t be naïve. We’ve still got people after us. If I can’t trust one of my men, they need to go.”

She rolls her eyes. “Luca’s not a threat. He loves you guys so much he was ready to sail me down river to save you both.”

“Exactly, he’s blinded. He’s only thinking about himself.”

“And you’re not?”

“I hardly think keeping you safe from a sadistic billionaire is selfish, but I’m open to hearing your take on it.”

“I can’t wait to meet this Liam guy; something tells me he’s not nearly as bad as you’re making him out to be. But if we’re talking about selfish… what about the doctor thing? I’ve said eight hundred times that I want to see how this plays out, but you guys keep pushing me into seeking medical care.” She snaps a look toward me that could burn a house down. “That’s selfish.”

I shake my head and tighten my jaw. “Well, I’ve made a decision for you, Cinderella. If you want to stay under our protection, you agree to see a doctor.”

“There’re no deals here, gangster. I don’t—”

“It’s not up for debate!” I stalk toward her from the opposite side of the room. She shrinks the closer I get. “You’re going to talk to the doctor and let him run his tests. We’re going to see what he can do. If he can’t fix this with reasonable accommodation, I’ll let this go.”

“No, you won’t. You’ll push harder. You’ll drag me all over the world from doctor to doctor until you find someone with a cure. Guess what?” She’s barking the words, nearly screaming. “There isn’t one! I’m fucked! Why will no one let me enjoy the last few minutes of my god damn life? I just want to run from imminent doom in peace, while three men fuck me. Isn’t that a reasonable enough request?”

I can’t help but laugh.
